The Cultural Triangle:
The ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa & Kandy form Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle.
In this triangle are found 5 UNESCO World Heritage Sites plus many more historical venues and monuments dating back to the birth of the islands civilization in the year 543 BC. This region was heavily influenced by India with many invasions by the Chola Kings of south India. Buddhism and Hinduism grew side-by-side and the islands race was often interwoven between the Sinhalese and Tamil races. This was also the basin of agriculture in the island with the most prolific growth of rice.

Anuradhapura was the islands first capital of the Sinhala Kings and Kandy was the last until 1815 when the entire island became a member of the British Empire.

Galle:
Galle saw the entry of Colonial rule in the island. In 1505 a Portuguese fleet was blown off course by storms into Galle. Realizing the strategic vantage point on shipping routes the Portuguese eventually captured the coastal areas of the island. However Galle is well known today because of Dutch Rulers who invaded and chased the Portuguese away and built strategic garrisons around the island to administer the coastal lands. Galle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Kandy & Nuwara Eliya:
Kandy remained independent from Portuguese and Dutch rule but in 1815 was captured by the British. Kandy is the gateway to the islands mountains and is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of The Buddha. Nuwara Eliya is the heart of world famous Ceylon Tea planted in the 19th century by British planters. Even today the influence of the British in the region is seen, in building architecture, street and venue names, the lake and golf course.

Golf Courses:

Sri Lanka has 3 beautiful Golf Course each providing a 18-holes game.
The Golf Courses are in Colombo, Kandy & Nuwara Eliya
- Colombo is warm and tropical
- Kandy is cool and hilly
- Nuwara Eliya is reminiscent of Scotland, mist, mountains and green

About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - An Island of Endless Enchantment

The first thing that visitors to Sri Lanka will observe as they approach it by air is the rich, lush green blanket with which it is covered, in startling contrast to the shades of warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The coastline is dotted with gently waving palm-trees and the interior is studded with green mist-shrouded mountans with hectares of neat tea plantations. This is an explorer's paradise.

Although small in size, the island offers an amazing diversity of climates and terrains - difficult to find anywhere else in the world. Ranging from golden beaches to jungle wilderness, arid "deserts" to cool mountain peaks, white cascading waterfalls to rolling green Golf Courses. Few places on earth offer such attractions in as compact an area as Sri Lanka.

In a single day, a visitor can travel from the ruins of ancient civilisations to deluxe beach resorts. Or enjoy the frenzy of a swarming festival to a tranquil rural village. Every point on the island can be reached within just a few hours by car.

Many nationalities have left their individual traits and cultures in Sri Lanka. Descendents of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British who ruled the country at various times. Moor and Indian traders as well as visiting Chinese and Malays, who opted to stay on, maintain their customs, traditions and religious beliefs brought in over centuries by their ancestors.

Ayurveda a gentle method of treating the root cause of illness of both mnd and body, is Sri Lanka's natural, holistic, health-care system. It is not only a form of medication, but a total way of life to known to generations.
The Cultural Triangle is located in the islands north central plain. Explore some of the best archaeological remains dating back to the 3rd Century BC. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, the cave temple at Dambulla are well worth a visit. The rock fortress of Sigiriya is probably the most romanticised site. Here a renegade king built his 'fortress in the sky' over 15 centuries ago.
